Managing for Creativity
From Slashdot I picked up a reference to an article titled Managing for Creativity in the Harvard Business Review Online. It's a refreshing read, and it boggles my mind that there are so many companyies out there that just don't "get it".

Why do you think Google are getting such good results. 20% of peoples time is allocated to "Do something cool that's not directly work related, but could help the company". I'm sure alot of this cool technology stems from this creative time, not the day to day drudgery.
No doubt about it, SAS is one top company that takes care of it's people. When I lived in the area, several of my contemporaries worked at SAS were loyal to the bone. The people I knew certainly didn't work 35 hour weeks, but that was also 5 years ago.
Time and time again, surveys have shown that IT folks care more about what they work on rather than how they are compensated. I also think that if employees are appreciated and think their opinion matters, they are more likely to be productive.
This was a great read and I found myself shaking my head the whole time.
