A Lesson Learned?

A sad story catches my eye over at the forums of Joel on Software. Sounds like a lesson learned the hard way.

One thing cant be messed up at any cost and is never ever can be forgiven for a DBA,be it Oracle or SS or any X/Y and that is Backup & Recovery.Anything but not Backup & Recovery.
I feel sorry for that person but yes a hard lesson learned, hope he will be more careful next time.
Sir,your writting style and way of presenting a topic is really awesome.Wanted to give feedback from quite a time:-)

A correlary of that would be that while "Recovery" is A Very Important Thing, "Backup" is a prerequisite. Backup is generally so much easier than recovery anyway that there's really no excuse for this scenario.

On the other hand, a client who hasn't backed up their data for quite a while is not necessarily on the moral or technical high ground.

I once worked with a client who discovered that a simple scripting error meant that they had no backups of their critical database for three months. They discovered this when another simple scripting error recursively deleted their Oracle home directory (and everything in it of course) on a Friday afternoon. That was a long, long weekend. Funny how these things always happen on a Friday.

Thanks for the kind words on the writing also, Aman.

"Being extra careful" may cost time/money/effort in the shortrun, but can often pay off in the end. Doesn't matter what field you're in.

Sucks for him. We learn more by screwing up than by doing the right thing the first time.

A stupid man never learns from his mistakes. A smart man always learns from his mistakes. A wise man learns from other peoples mistakes.
